Log Collection App

    Anyone out there worked on a log gathering app to make it easier for users to submit Crashplan logs to you that you would be willing to share?

    Some users have no issue following the steps and sending the zip my way but others are a no go.  We used to in teh past back up the logs with the users backup but then found it was not as handy as we thought because the logs we needed were still on the client and for some reason it stopped taking to Crashplan.

    I've heard of some folks using something like this to upload to Jamf but my google foo is not finding anything and i'd like it to do windows too!

    We are still on prem at the moment but moving to the cloud soon and will miss the logs feature in the web console.  Not sure if others would find this handy but we could share if we wound up building something to do this work.

    Ed:  I'm not aware of anything here at Cornell, but our Org Admins are pretty independent and may have developed something without alerting me.  WIll ping them via Slack and if I get any useful answers, I'll pass on

      Generated some stimulating conversation via Slack here - thanks for that!

      End result. pt 2: one of our Org Admins has a script that he wrote for gathering logs from Windows devices - I've attached that here.  Here's the Org Admin's comment

    "This is the simple PowerShell script I have in CM. You also need a file share location to write to, ideally with
    very limited access rules such that a domain computer can only traverse (not read or enumerate contents) up to the log directory and only write to the log directory itself."

      YMMV, but hope this helps

      Part 2: Macintosh.  There was universal agreement that you do not want to upload the log files to Jamf, for as one Org Admin wrote "I would definitely not suggest using Jamf's policy logs as a way of typically reading full log files. It would be excessive, likely hard on the database, and your output will be truncated."  Given that, though, one Org Admin did write a script (attached) that writes the last backup failure to Jamf.  Perhaps that can be a starting point for you?

    I use Jamf, and created a script to gather logs from other apps.
    You create it as a self service policy that uploads the logs to a specific location (in my location a SMB share)

    It's a relatively easy process with Jamf and would work on other management systems as well.

    Hey everyone!

    I come bearing good news. I, too, saw this need, and wrote a program called Auto42 that you might find useful. You can find the download links below (which includes documentation and examples);

    Windows
    MacOS
    Linux

    There is a EULA you need to check before using the app, and this will come up when you first run it. There is also a command line switch to accept the EULA automatically if running in command-line mode. The crowning feature for Auto42 is that it can be deployed using something like SCCM, and we've had it run against 1000s of devices for the purposes of identifying files that are unable to backup, which helped a large customer identify which incomplete backups they needed to worry about.

    It's important to note that this tool isn't supported by Code42, even though the app is signed for Windows and MacOS, but if you have any usage questions, feel free to post to the community and I'll do my best.

    Here is some additional information regarding support;

    For help with these apps/scripts, post your question on the Code42 community in the Open Discussion forum: https://success.code42.com/discussion. If you don't already have an account, you can create one. For more information, see https://success.code42.com/help/community-documentation/join-forums.Instructions When Posting
    Use the following for the subject of the post:App Help: [name of app] - [accurate, complete, short description of problem]

    The more specific information you can provide in your post, the better. Please include:

    • Complete description of the problem
    • What you've tried to do to resolve it (if relevant)
    • Log files, if available. Most Code42-provided scripts generate a log file.
      • IMPORTANT: Remove any sensitive or personally identifiable information before posting to the community."
    • Screenshots, error messages, etc.
    • Any other details that will help someone else understand your issue

    Hey Ben,

    Cool app.

    I notice that it does a bunch of network checks... but doesn't appear to allow for the user to configure it to use the Proxy PAC file that the crashplan app uses.

    Any chance a v1.1 could add proxy support? :)

    Hi Phillip,

    Sure, that's definitely something I can look at. I'll make a note and include it as part of the other updates I have planned for the next version.

    Thanks for the reply!
