Restore folders for client show up empty

Howdy All, thanks in advance for any help or suggestions: I have a user with a MacBook who changed his user account. He did some folder redirects (the exact method unknown) so he could access data from the older account. When he goes to his CrashPlan utility ....it shows folders empty that should have data. I've tried a second account with him, but the results are the same. I've suggested (but dread) just wiping the MacBook and starting fresh ....though it is difficult to pry it from him for even a short while.
I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this "empty folder" situation? Thanks/

    Hi Benjamin
This might be obvious but on the restore pane did you check the view hidden and deleted items options?

Otherwise, check the linking/aliasing you mention. I know Windows a shortcut to an object is literally backed up as a shortcut rather than the target.

If a symbolic link was used, it may be the same deal.

I've seen this before.  Full Disk Access was the problem. This was the fix: https://www.rmtechteam.com/blog/crashplan-macos-mojave-not-backing-up-files-with-personal-data/

Many thanks to all! Roy Clark had the answer....the Catalina security settings needed tweaked as mentioned in the article Roy linked.
